(From your response on the old forums, it sounded like I should re-post this here. Hope that’s correct!)

I have tried to work this out, but no luck so far.
I copied a test site to the real domain. There are a few differences in style between the two sites, so I looked compared them, and I see that the classes “two-col” and “cs” are being applied to the body on my test site, but not on the new one.

I’m pretty sure those are classes applied by Volatyl, but I went over the Volatyl options several times and they do seem to be identical. What am I missing??

.cs is from volatyl, two-col from your child theme.

could you activate your live site for a moment?

    Thanks for chiming in, flamerz!

.cs and .two-col are actually both from Volatyl.

.cs is what determines the layout of the site… content – sidebar. So if that layout is chosen globally or on a single post/page/download, the body will receive that class.

.two-col is just a tad more general. It covers ALL 2 column layouts. So if the global (or singular) layout is content – sidebar OR sidebar – content, it receives that class.

It’s built this way because, for example, there are 3 different 3 column layouts. In the CSS, not everything you write for one of those layouts will need to apply to just 1 of the 3 configurations. Some of it will apply to everything. So to save on CSS, you have the .one-col, .two-col, and .three-col classes to play with if you choose to do so.

With that being said, can you make the site live so I can see exactly what the problem is? The user permissions on the account you created for me is pretty restricted and I can’t see much. If I can see in detail what the differences are, I can definitely help. Describing them would be best.

Thanks for the offers of assistance!
I was able to guess what/why the various classes are/being applied, as I used them a few times when I changed the layout for specific pages (no sidebars, etc). I just can’t figure out why they aren’t working here…when for all I can tell, they should be!

I just made the site live.

That is definitely strange. Everything looks perfectly normal except for those two missing body classes… which fixes the layout as soon as they’re added.

I’d really like to see what’s going on in your back end. Can you increase my account permissions? I’ve edited your first post to remove the username and password. I am already logged in.

If you don’t want to do that, try deactivating all plugins and see if that fixes the problem (there may be a strange conflict). If that works, activate each plugin one by one refreshing the site after each one. Whichever one breaks the site is causing the conflict.

    Oh man. 🙁

You’re running version 1.1.6. Your license key is not activated so you haven’t been getting updates. We’re on version 1.2.4. You’re pretty far behind with some pretty significant changes.

It looks like you didn’t carefully follow the license key instructions. You’ve added your license key to the database but now you need to activate it.

Depending on what you’ve done in your child theme, that could make a really significant difference in your site. I’ll help you get through it for sure. But you definitely need to activate your license key and update your software.

Let me know when this is done and we’ll go from there.

You mean, I added the license key but didn’t activate it? Oh. I’m sorry. That was so careless. But it does explain the problem.

Well, that’s probably not the biggest deal. This is a very simple site. I don’t have anything complicated in the functions. I’m sure a little poking around the css will fix it. I just didn’t want to change my child theme css when clearly something was off.

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it.

Yes that is correct. The way the updater system works is that the license key first needs to be in the database just like a post or page. Once saved in the database, which is what the blue button did for you, you can now activate and deactivate the license key on command. That second step is kind of pointless in your situation but for more complex systems and usage, the ability to activate and deactivate specific license keys comes in handy.

I see that you’ve activated your license key. Now all you need to do is go to Dashboard -> Appearance -> Themes and you’ll see the update nag at the top of the screen. Once your core is updated, your child theme will respond accordingly. If not much has been done, there may not be any changes. That should definitely take care of your original problem, though.

    Let me know!

Thankfully, the client is having problems with the lease on the new building this site is launching for, so they didn’t need it up sooner 🙂
    Thanks again for your help!

You mean, you’ve never heard of a mikvah?
Understandable. It’s a Jewish law (Orthodox Jews keep it–not sure about Conservative or Reform, probably to some degree), but it’s lesser known in the “outside” world.

No, and very short entry in my language wikipedia.

But trying to google to get an idea.
