I’m going around in circles with this — I swear the sub-menu has a default box-shadow css property applied to it, but for the life of me, I can’t get rid of it. Am I seeing things? I’ve tried everything to get rid of it even border:none, but there is a slight shadow all the way around giving it a subtle floating effect. Hmm. Please have a look at the attached pic.

Hi, Terrance. You’re not crazy. There’s a box shadow! Unfortunately, I need to know your exact setup to tell you exactly how to remove it. Volatyl itself does not have any default box shadows so you must be using a child theme.

Is the site live? If so, shoot me a link and I’ll have you taken care of in seconds. If not, and you know how to use your inspector to find the HTML element you’re targeting, box-shadow: none; is the CSS property and value you’re looking for. If you’re using the Starter Child Theme or one of the Child Theme Skeletons, let me know which one. Either way, your problem will be done and over with shortly. 🙂

I’m just going to go ahead and assume you started out with the Starter Child Theme. If that’s the case, look in its stylesheet for this CSS selector:

    .header-navigation .menu > li:hover > ul,
    .secondary-navigation .menu li:hover > ul

It has the box-shadow on it. Just change it to box-shadow: none;.

Ah! I just searched in the child theme and found it! Using firebug, I could not find it though for some strange reason so that’s why I was confused.

    It was here:

    .short-menu .menu > li:hover > ul,
    .full-menu .menu li:hover > ul

    thanks!

Oh sorry about that! A few updates ago, I really simplified the menu structure and adjusted the classes a little bit. .short-menu and .long-menu are old classes and should actually only work on old versions of Volatyl. So please make sure your version is up-to-date. You don’t have to but… you know…

If you have Volatyl up-to-date, the CSS selector I specified before is what you’d need to use instead. The Starter Child Theme was updated along with the Volatyl update so if you’re not too deep into your project, it could be useful to make sure you don’t set yourself up for issues in the future.

Here are the details of that update from a month or so ago. http://volatylthemes.com/volatyl-update-134/
